When was the furnished room published
Some rise far enough to fly away from its shackles and yet there are others who make it their home. A true tale in the classic sense. It was eerie and gothic.
The language seems to start out slow and creeps along soon gathering speed like a runaway train, climaxing and coming back to the station. That was the sense I got. This coupled with the striking imbalance of the sweet and ghostly scent of marionette made for an altogether anxious, lonely and chilling story of the struggles and uncertainties that young people face, in search of self and identity. Henry can do no other minor romantic horror tale from , perhaps interesting as a snapshot of a world of rooming houses rather than as a desperate failed love story.
The classic O. Henry 'twist at the end' is all too predictable but then we have had over a century of ghostly and horror tropes since. We can expect that it would have been a bit more of a shock to periodical readers then than it is today. Jun 28, E rated it really liked it.
The ending is classic for this type of story, so the stars are for the use of language that makes the reader feel uncomfortable and at odds. It's creepy, but not nexeyin the way that would make you sleep with the light on. It feels vaguely familiar - it's one of may have read ages ago, or just because of its time period and style is familiar.

Pg count seems off. Not a bad story. A surprise ending is always my favorite part. This was classified as horror but it just seemed like fiction to me. Apr 11, Andrea rated it really liked it. As he sits down and tries to relax, he suddenly smells the strong, sweet scent of mignonette. A smell he recognizes as a scent Eloise used to wear.
He suddenly knows, with complete conviction, that Eloise has been in this room. He finds minor traces of many people, but nothing that belongs to Eloise. Defeated, he returns to his room and finds it quiet. The perfume and the spirit are gone, leaving only a musty odor. Drained and broken, he tears his bedsheet into strips and uses it to block the door and window. Turning the gas on at full blast, he goes to sleep and awaits death. Downstairs, the housekeeper tells the friend about the new tenant, and the friend asks if he knows what happened in that room last week.
It seems that the week before a tenant killed herself in that room - a young woman who had a mole by her left eyebrow. Related summaries: books by O. Henry After Twenty Years. Life will go on as normal for those in the house and Mrs Purdy will lie again to the next occupant of the room. Who like the young man will never know the true story of the previous occupant. My impression of the boy after reading the story is that he is desperate to make a connection with Eloise.
