Which gentoo for i7

Suggest adding Intel's suggested optimizations someplace for i7 processors. But Haswell is not V2 but V3. So this should be V3. I think it would be best to sort Intel and AMD sections based on release dates. Or at least approximate. I don't know about Intel, but AMD section is in somewhat random order. Better yet, if a table format could be used Although it might be too wide.

I'd like to propose a removal of the Ryzen section and replace the contents with a link to Ryzen GCC. I think this could be beneficial, especially now as we get more information every day regarding the segfaults. So updating only one article makes sense and is more consistent.

Opinions etc please. As I had to find out after compiling qtcore 5. Therefore, "safe flags" needs to be extended with -mno-aes for Ivy Bridge, Sandy Bridge and many Westmere.

All times are GMT. There is a limit to how many parallel make threads make can get running concurrently. Its low 10s, not hundreds, for most packages. When you hit that limit, adding more RAM and CPU doesn't help you go faster unless emerge can run several packages at the same time. Thats determined by the dependencies. The law of diminishing returns kicks in quite early. Now I realize my system can handle Gentoo and is adequate LegionOfHell, Ah.. It depends how good hyperthreading is.

I would go for "-j8" as a starting point. You may want to reduce it, depending on what you want to do while it builds, or even increase it for most things if you will build while you sleep. That means that over lots of packages it averages out.

Find what works for you. Updating just meant leaving it alone for a day or so every few weeks.
